Australia Keeping Tea Rationing

CANBERRA, Wed. (1 p.m.)— Mr Chifley stated in the House of Representatives that the Government had no intention of abandoning tea rationing.

Replying to Mr Lang (Independent), who suggested that the Government policy of subsidising tea imports might amount to a subsidy to the world tea cartel. Mr Chifley said world tea production was still only about 80 to 85 per cent of the world demand. It would be some years before the Netherlands East Indies was in full production again, when the world- demand.could be met.

The Government was paying 2/6 a lb subsidy on tea, and was not prepared to allow unlimited consumption while that subsidy was paid.
