Firm Tone Prevails At Northland Stock Sales

A FIRM tone prevailed in most Sections at stock sales held throughout Northland during the past week. The market was not particularly busy, with the bulk of activity centring around store cattle transactions.

Values were firm for this class of cattle. At Kamo dairy cows and heifers made better money than they did last week. Beef sold on a par with previous quotations and all classes of pigs sold freely.

Store cattle again commanded good prices, with a strong demand from farmers who are* finding that they Have a good deal of surplus growth with which to contend. As a result they were keenly interested in the offerings and competition was brisk with values high. Forward condition 3-year-old cattle made to £l6/5/- at Kamo where several lines changed hands at around £ls. Good quality 2-year-old steers also sold well, prices ranging to £l2/16/-. Yearling Shorthorns made £B/10/-. At the same sale cows and runners sold to £l6. Beef cattle were offered in only small numbers, selling on a par with last week’s rates when ox beef was quoted at £3/5/1 per 1001 b. Cow beef remained about 10/- per 1001 b below this figure. Dairy cattle values, which have been spasmodic recently, were up again at Kamo where a fair yarding was offered. Best cows and heifers close to profit made to £l3/10/- and the general

run of transactions resulted in slightly improved prices on last week. A keen demand was evident for good quality i yearlings. j Cows in milk sold steadily at satis'factory rates at a clearing sale where a good herd was offered. The top price was £l6. PIGS, MUTTON Fat pigs came forward in good numbers, meeting a steady inquiry. Heavy prime baconers changed hands at prices ranging to £6/16/-. Porkers were wanted by local butchers who paid up to £5/9/-. • Stores were in demand, with large sorts selling to £4/10/-. Values for slips and weaners showed a tendency to improve. Prices for mutton were firm. Butchers bought medium-weight shorn wethers around the £2/3/-- to £2/5/mark. Flock sheep values showed a slight improvement and growing interest was evident in this connection. Good prices were realised at a clearing sale at which several lines of sheep were offered.
