'Tadpole Wing Tested
MELBOURNE, Fri. (11.30 a.m.) —A new “tadpole” wing, which has been developed after two years of research by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Government aircraft factories has been proved a practical success by a flight test over Melbourne. A glider fitted with the Griffith suction wing, as it is officially known, was towed to 10,000 ft by a Dakota transport plane and then cast off. It returned safely to its own base at Fisherman’s Bend. Officers say that it is the first time a wing of such thickness has been proved in free flight. Suggested by Dr A. A. Griffith, it is designed to eliminate drag by sucking through the wing itself the layer of air which would otherwise create resistance.
