Goal Strike Threat Greater
SYDNEY, Fri. (11 a.m.). —The threat of a general coal strike in New South Wales has increased with the collapse of the conference between the Australian Workers’ Union and the Miners’ Federation over the Kemeira tunnel dispute.
The conference was called by the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley), who said that he was more than disappointed that , the Miners’ Federation had apparently repudiated, or at least failed to endorse the agreement with the union.
Mr Chifley said that he and the Minister of Shipping and Fuel (Senator Ashley) were still seeking to reopen negotiations through the Australian Council of Trade Unions. The miners’ attitude has hardened with their announcement that they will continue their campaign against the rival union for control of employees in metalliferous mines at Mount Isa, Queensland, Captain’s Flat, New South Wales, and Leigh Creek, South Australia.
Insistence on this course could extend the dispute over night.
