A Whale Bobbed Up

KAITAIA, Thu. (Sp.).—Appearing so close to the boat that it could in one occupant’s words, “have been speared with a carving fork,” a large whale gave the occupants of a fishing launch off Merita Bay last week-end an unusual thrill. On board Mr D. J, McKay's launch Rowena, from Mangonui, a party from Awanui was busy hauling in a mixed catch of fish when the whale surfaced alongside the vessel. It dived and re-appeared three more time in the same proximity.

Although some of the children aboard the launch received a scare, it was for the party a rare opportunity to view a deepsea mammal rarely seen at such close quarters.
