NORTHLAND PROVIDES 100 TONS OF HAY
MORE than 100 tons of Northland hay have been sent to the Manawatu and Wairarapa areas where, owing to drought conditions during last summer, dairy farmers have been precariously short of fodder for their stock.
The president of the Whangarei subprovincial of Federated Farmers (Mr H. E. Hewlett), commenting on the success of the move to provide hay for the drought-stricken areas, said this morning that ijiore than 50 tons of the total amount'had been obtained from the Whangarei district, while a similar amount had been despatched from the Middle North. He stated that farmers had advised him that further supplies of hay were available if needed, but he believed that orders from the south were filled in the meantime. If further hay was needed there would be no difficulty in placing orders. appreciation expressed Mr Hewlett expressed his thanks to the Northland farmers for the manner in which they had come forward to help their fellow-dairymen in the drought areas. He also mentioned his appreciation of the cooperation received from the
Department of Agriculture’s instructor at Whangarei (Mr E. H. Arnold), who had collaborated with Federated Farmers in the project. The Railways Department had also been of considerable assistance and had made the necessary trucks available without delay, Mr Hewlett said. NEED FOR ORGANISATION There had been a definite need for for some organisation to handle such projects when an emergency of this nature cropped up in any particular district. In the past, Northland farmers had experienced a severe drought, followed by a winter in which fodder was in extremely short supply. It was only through the good services of a firm of Auckland merchants that the urgently-needed hay was obtained. As a result of these experiences, Federated Farmers had set up an organisation to handle any future emergencies, Mr Hewlett concluded
