Baroda Demands Abdication Of Ruler
BOMBAY. Tue. (11 a.m.)— The Baroda state legislature has demanded the abdication of its Maharajah, the Gaekwar, and has called upon the Indian Government to institute a regency council.
The Legislature, in a resolution, said the Gaekwar “misused and misappropriated” funds totalling £2,500.000 from the Treasury during April and May. It added that the Gaekwar took large loans, often without interest. The Prime Minister (Dr Jivraj Mehta) suggested that the Treasury be reimbursed from the Gaekwar’s “large investments in India and abroad.” The resolution added a demand for abdication, partly due to the Gaekwar’s conduct since his bigamous marriage in 1943. The Gaekwar conceded a democratic Government to Baroda last April, but left without forming a Government, saying he was going to Paris for health reasons. He attended the Dcrbj 7 in England.
