Princess Te Puea Hurt, Disappointed
AUCKLAND, Wed. (P.A.) Advice that meanwhile the Government will not proceed further with the erection of the proposed large building at the Maori pa at Ngaruawahia as a memorial to the Maori Battalion,' has been received by Princess Te Puea Herangi from the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Fraser).
The proposal was that the building should serve as a grandstand during the Royal tour, and also provide permanent sleeping accommodation for local and visiting Maoris. Mr Fraser said that in a year or two the Government would have made up some of the leeway in providing homes for the people, and she could then be assured of his wholehearted support in the building project. Princess Te Puea said today that she was very hurt and disappointed that the Government had changed its mind.
She had not yet had the heart to tell her people, who had been working >nd saving for more than two years, that there would be no building.
