Wharf Strike Closes Newcastle Plants
SYDNEY. Wed. G p.m.) Watersiders at Newcastle, who have been on strike since Thursday, have rejected recommendations by the state and Newcastle branch executives of their union to resume work and submit their dispute to a board of reference. The strike is holding up the loading of wheat and steel for overseas and inter-state ports and threatens to close down most of the production processes at Lysaght’s, and reduce the operations at Stewart and Lloyds. Lysaght’s galvanising department closed today, throwing 250 men out of work. EIGHT SHIPS IMMBOBILISED
Stewart and Lloyd’s galvanising department has also closed down temporarily, but the men are being retained in other jobs. Eight vessels are immobilised. The watersiders are claiming additional assistance in the sorting of general cargo in the sheds. Their claim is based on the ground that the shipping companies receive 2/- a ton extra for cargoes sorted in the sheds.
