Defends Selection Of NZ Hockey Reps
CHRISTCHURCH, Sat. (P.A.i— He had seen every test since the first iii 1922, and he was satisfied that the best players New Zealand could offer have been selected each time, said the president of the New Zealand Hockey Association (Mr H. S. J. Goodman) replying to criticisms of the selection of the test hockey team to play the Australians. Mr Goodman, discussing selection methods, explained that the three selectors, Messrs W. H. Down (Christchurch), W. Newsham (Auckland), and K. Falconer (Wellington), would cover the whole Dominion.
Mr Down would travel with the Australian team, and Manawatu would be asked to arrange a provincial match for the selector to attend. The selectors would attend the Southland-Otago match and they would be at the tournament in Dunedin. Associations had been asked to nominate players considered worthy of inclusion in the test side and selectors would endeavour to see all these. He also denied allegations that umpires were physically unfit and unable to keep up with play.
