Glading Leads Amateur Golfers
HAMILTON, Sat. (P.A.) The greens were in splendid order and the light was perfect when the first qualifying round of the North Island amateur golf championships was played this morning at St Andrews.
The best score returned early was that of the New Zealand open champion, R. H. Glading. who went out in 39 and came home brilliantly in 33. to give him a 72. Glading scored birdies at the 12th. 14lh and 16th, and missed a putt at the 17th which cost him a birdie there. He played flawless golf on the way home.
After a rather patchy start. J. C. Pelham played consistent golf to return 77. He went out in 49 and came home in 37. G. P. Roberts and G. V. Revell each returned cards of 76. The former went out in 38, while Revell took 40 for the outward half. GOOD RECOVERIES
A. R. Kitto was in good form and his 37 on the way out was the best first half of the morning. He finished with 74 and. hitting his shots accurately throughout, scored birdies at the 2nd. 9th and 16th holes. After a disastrous start, when he required six at the first hole, W. E. Jones made a magnificent recovery. He scored birdies at the 2nd, 3rd and sth. but was three over par at the turn. With a series of bogeys and birdies, he came home in 35.
The national amateur champion, B. M. Silk, was scratching from the .outset and he three putted on the first and third greens. He mixed an ordinary exhibition with some brilliant golf, reaching the turn in 40 and coming home in 38.
