Minister Explains Limit On Taxis
DUNEDIN, Fn. (P.A.)—“lt appears that there is a difference of opinion in relation to the application of the 20mile limit to be imposed upon taxis, in the four main centres,” said the Minister of Transport (Mr Haekelt) yesterday.
"There is no law that actually prevents a taxi from accepting a fare or fares from, say, Dunedin to the Oamaru races, but there is an agreement in existence between the Commissioner of Transport and the Taxi-Owners and Drivers’ Federation that has as its objective the, application of a 20-mile limit.
“The penalty agreed upon, which will definitely be enforced, is that if a taxi-driver undertakes to take fares outside the 20-mile limit, then his future petrol licences will be reduced by the assessed amount of petrol so used.
“The Transport Department has been instructed to keep a strict look-out for breaches of the regulation, and ignorance will net !;o accepted as an excuse. ■
"Permits to travel beyond the 20mile limit will be granted in cases of emergency,' such as sickness.”
