Lord Provost’s Views On Northland Wealth

“This area of New Zealand seems to contain great resources of wealth in pasture and products, and appears to be only partially developed.

"Ii affords tremendous opportunities for enterprise and initiative, and I should think that much could be gained Here by ihe application of science to the potentialities of the soil." ,

sooutci minx mat muen couiu ue gained here by ihe application of science to the potentialities of the soil." , Those wore the comments of Sir John Falconer, ex-Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh; in a brief interview at Whangarei last night, after he had returned from a day’s tour of the Bay of Islands. Sir John was the 155th Lord Provost of Edinburgh. He said an unbroken record of Lord Provosts of Edinburgh dated to 1275 A.D., but the office had ifs origin well oefore that time. Lord Provost was an office comparable with that of Lord Mayor. IMPRESSED BY SCENERY He was greatly impressed by (he scenery he had viewed yesterday. Sir John said. The Bay of Islands was one of the most magnificent panoramas he had ever seen. part of the Dominion seems to have an association of sports of all kinds and should prove an enormous •

attraction.” he said. ( Referring to the visit of the King and Queen, he said that New Zealand should strive to advertise her potentialities, as the attention of the whole, world would be focussed on the Dominion during (he Royal visit. TREMENDOUS BENEFIT New Zealanders'should be aware of this fact and should realise the tremendous benefit which would follow their tour. This point was emphasised by Sir John speaking at a supper held in his honour at the Warrington Studios, where he was Ihe guest of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce and the Whangarei Retailers’ Association. Extending a welcome to Sir John, the president of the chamber (Mr K. Haslett) said that his address had allayed fears which might have been entertained for Britain’s recovery. AID TO BRITAIN Enlightening and inspiring, it conveyed a real message to the people of Whangarei and would contribute substantially to the support which he hoped would be accorded to the Whangarei Borough Council’s aid for Bidtain campaign, which is to be inaugurated next week. Sir John, replying briefly, reiterated the appreciation of the people of Britain for New Zealand s assistance when help was sorely needed. Prior to supper, songs were contributed by Mr A. Cameron, accompanied by Mr C. Pilling. Today Sir John visited Waipoua Forest.
