Juniors Catch Eye
Junior Rugby games in the Far North also got away to a good start on Saturday and the standard in most cases was creditably high. Most success came the way of the two Kaitaia teams, City players surprising themselves to win 21—11 from the strong Aupouri team combining the best of Te Hapua and Te Kao young men, while Old Boys romped home 32—3 from Doubtless Bay. Herekino won narrowly from Te Rarawa, last year’s junior champions.
Considerable interest attached to the defeat of Kiwi United 6—5 at the hands of Pukepoto, a new junior XV coached by Moses Yates, one of Mangonui County’s best-known footballers. “Mo” has represented the county more times than he can remember and in 1922 went to Australia with the N.Z. Maori League team. Both teams played good football with the honours on the Pukepoto side going to Norman, a slight but fiery forward who has been regraded after playing senior for Te Hapua last year, and John Yates. J. Gibbons, of the Kiwi five-eighth line, scored his side’s only try. Junior football in Mangonui County this year promises to rival senior in interest, and Saturday’s opening games drew an encouraging following.
