Tomcat Lived Through Fire
AUCKLAND, Wed. (Sp.)— Jock, a large tomcat, survived the £150,000 fire at the factory of Heards, Ltd., eonfe’ctionery manufacturers, on Monday evening.
He was found yesterday, still dazed and singed, and with his forelegs paralysed.
Staff members found him huddled helplessly in the debris. The unhappy animal, which made it obvious that he was glad to see his rescuers, was handed over to the care of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the hope that he would make a complete recovery.
He was attended to by Dr W. G. Fischel, a veterinary surgeon for the society, and yesterday afternoon he began to regain the use of his paralysed legs. His eyes and nose were badly affected and he was still a victim of severe shock.
Having been given a sedative, lie soon fell asleep and spent last night in the society’s rooms in Victoria Street. No arrangements for the replacement of stock or machinery had been made as yet, said Mr J. W. Watson, manager of Heards, Ltd., yesterday. New machinery would probably have to be imported to replace that destroyed in the fire. Mr Watson added that the present staff would remain in the firm’s employ while its future plans were being decided.
