Bowls Tourney Reversals in

DUNEDIN, Fri. (P.A.).—ln spite of light rain, the preliminary rounds of pairs play continued with the fifth round of this competition in the Dominion bowling championships this morning. The greens were heavy, but no heavier than at any other time during the tournament. First results showed a reversal of yesterday’s form when Maslin (Hawera) was beaten 20—15 by Haworth (Canterbury). The score had been 21 —15 in Maslin’s favour yesterday when he met Haworth. Spiller (Khandallah) had a surprisingly comfortable margin from Pivac (Pukekohe) when he eliminated him 19—10. This was another reversal of a previous result, Pivac having beaten Spiller on Wednesday. COMPETITION VERY OPEN Marshall (George Town) was another prominent competitor to be eliminated. Having got through the preliminary rounds, better-class players were now beginning to meet each other, and competition from this stage will be very open. Lowry (Khandallah), who represented Petone when he skipped the winning pair in 1937, still had one life intact after the fifth round. _ One of eight two-lifers left in the singles, Symons (Ctaki Railway) was eliminated.

Armstrong (Runanga), who was beaten by Forbes (Phoenix) in the third round yesterday. 16—14, suffered another defeat from the same player. Mingins (Cnehunga) progressed to the sixth round at the expense of Beath (Owaka) who heat him on Wednesday. TITLEHOLDERS OUT Last year’s pairs winners, Hawkins and Exelby (Frankton) were eliminated in a close game with Webster (Lower Hutt), losing' on the last head, but Turpin (Cantei’bury), lead in winning pairs in 1936, was a successful skip and progressed to the sixth round. Barrow (Seatoun) was eliminated. In the second round Both Haworth (Canterbury) and Spiller (Khandallah) were eliminated, the former by Edwards (Balclutha). and Spiller by Lowry (Ashburton), who will meet Riach (Taieri) at the next stage.
