French Side Beats Kiwis
PARIS, Sun. (11 a.m.).—Fast play marked the opening of the match between the Kiwis and Centre-Lyonais, at Lyons. A high wind hampered both teams. New Zealand attacked fiercely, and against the general run of play Crespier broke through and scored a try after a brilliant run. Barreteau converted. The Kwis swept downfield in force, Newton crossing after a brilliant passing burst. Warwick Clark converted to equalise the scores. New Zealand kept up a strong attack. but the French defence was sound. Barris broke through the Kiwi's defence and scored. Barreteau converted. The Kiwis were pressing on the French line at half-time when the Frenchmen were leading by 10—5, HAS FOURTH GOAL Centre-Lyonaise attacked strongly on resuming. Pony broke through and ran well to score under the posts for Barreteau to convert. The Frenchmen continued to press home their attack and received a penalty kick from which Barreteau landed his fourth goal. Centre-Lyonaise exploited the wind to advantage and Barreteau aroused the crowd to high excitement by brilliant play, going over for a try. In the closing minutes the Kiwis staged a fine comeback right on time when Newton scored his second try. Roy Clark landed a goal as the bell rang. Centre-Lyonaise deserved its 20—10 win.
Wallabies Also Lose PARIS. Sun. (11.45 a.m.) France beat the Australian Rugby Union team 13—6 after leading 13—3 at half-time. Attacking strongly from the outset. France crossed the Wallabies’ goal-Jine after five minutes’ play, when Basquet charged through a group of Australian defenders. Alvarez converted. The Australians found the French tackling keen and effective. They gained their first points when Tonkin kicked , a penalty goal. The French defence held against repeated Australian efforts to break through. Basquet scored his second try after a short, elusive run. Pomathios. following a passing movement, gained France’s third try which Alvarez converted.
The Australians failed with a promising breakaway movement through Mcßride fumbling. FASTER PACK France nearly scored again early in the second spell when the fast-moving three-quarter iine outdistanced the defenders. but Emery touched down. France had the better of exchanges because of a lighter, faster pack. Poor handling by the French backs prevented them getting more points. Tonkin landed a second penalty goal for Australia midway through the second half. The Wallabies did not show up as a combined attacking force for the remainder of the match, although Tonkin and Allen showed individual brilliance.
Trade Deal With Japan NEW YORK, Sun. (10 a.m.).—Yaras and Company, one of the 104 American concerns initiated by the Allied Occupation Command last July to help Japan restore foreign trade, announced the signing of a 57.000.000 steel and coal contract with the Japanese Board of Trade. Under it the company would deliver to Japan 30,000 long tons of coking coal, and Japan, in return, would deliver 20,000 metric tons of rolled steel sheets and 5000 metric tons of galvanised sheets.
