South First For Jam Sugar
Many Auckland grocers have received inquiries from housewives anxious to obtain their extra 31b of sugar for jam-making, while fruit supplies are in stock and cheap. Some retailers whose stocks are low have had to refuse immediate orders. A representative of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company stated on Sunday that there were ample supplies of sugar in stock at the works to meet all orders. However, it might be a fortnight before all Auckland merchants received their increased allocations, as bulk deliveries would be sent to the southern centres first. He added that when the works closed before Christmas all Auckland orders were up to date, but southern shipments had not been made for some time.
There has been no heavy demand at Whangarei grocers for the extra sugar, but some grocers are suggesting that customers should not lift the 31b unless urgently required.
