Garden Remanded

SYDNEY, Thu.—An allegation that £50,000 had been paid by a Queensland firm to certain persons, of whom John Smith Garden, a former Federal M.P., was believed to be one, was made by counsel for the Crown in a special Federal Court yesterday, when Garden was charged on three summonses relating to a letter alleged to be concerned with a timber licence for the Bulolo Valley, New Guinea. Outlining the case for the prosecution, Mr J. W. Shand, K.C., said that evidence would purport to show that letters had been signed by Garden without the authority of the Minister of External Territories.

He agreed to an adjournment, but asked for Extensive bail. Garden was remanded on bail of £320. His counsel. Mr S. Isaacs, said that his client had a good defence.
