Auckland Bookmaker Fined £250 Today

AUCKLAND, Thu. (P.A.)—Charged with bookmaking Francis Regis Malloy, 44, pleaded guilty in the Police Court today. He was fined £250 by Mr L. G. H. Sinclair, S.M., who, when counsel for Malloy referred to the Gaming Commission report, said: '“I am going to judge this case uninfluenced by anything else going on in the outside world.”

Police evidence was that in a raid on Malloy’s office on December 31, records seized showed that for five days’ racing Malloy accepted bets totalling £4403. Malloy admitted that his weekly betting totalled about £IOOO. Counsel for Malloy,i said bookmakers did think they would receive some measure of licensing, but in view of the report of the Gaming Commission, it would mean an end of bookmakers of Malloy’s class. Imposing the fine, the magistrate said he was not influenced by the fact that the Gaming Commission had been sitting.
