Protest, Fear Or Holidays?

AUCKLAND, Thu. (P.A.)—lt is reported that many of Auckland’s bookmakers will “cease bu|:ine<ss” indefinitely from Saturday. Inquiries today appeared to confirm this possibility.

Some operators stated that the decision to cease business was designed as a protest against the recommendations of the Gaming Commission and “would give the public an idea of the chaos that must result if bookmakers closed down.’*

Another source expressed the view that the probability of more intensive police raiding following the commission’s report contributed to the decision.

However, one section of operators said they had chosen this period when there was comparatively little racing for their “annual holidays.”
