4/6 An Hour For Loading Hides

AUCKLAND, Wed. (Sp.).—Offered 4/C an hour for loading hides, a gang of men employed in the hold of the British steamer Fordsdale expressed their dissatisfaction with the offer and ceased work.

Later in the afternoon, however, they agreed to accept the special rate, v/hich was lOd an hour above the ordinary wage for wharf labour, and work was resumed. Loading the hold commenced on Monday and representations were then made for a special rate on account of the confined space in which the hides were being stacked in the steamer. When the hides were lowered into the ship they had to be stored in oil tanks within the hold. The Foi-dsdale is expected to sail fo’’ Hull and London on December 17.
