Medical Attitude To Municipal Compost*
No inherent risk attaches to municipal composting, providing that building and conduct is properly managed. This was stated to the Whangarei Borough Council last night by the medical officer of health (Er J. L. Newman), in a report on the proposal .that the council should compost its rubbish collections. Dr Newman suggested that the compost should be made in structures with concrete sides, the heat generated by the decaying refuse being enough to kill larvae. Providing fomentation took place under a layer of earth, no nuisance would arise. Only when the sides were uncovered or the surface was inadequately covered did objectional smells and flies become troublesome, as well as unpleasant and dangerous. He suggested, however, that composting should be conducted well away from .human habitation. The question was referred to the works committee.
