Indian Patrol In Clash With Raiders

NEW DELHI, Sun. (11 a.m.)—An Indian Army patrol clashed with 400 raiding tribesmen 20 miles west of Akhnur, says Reuters Jammu correspondent. The patrol killed 30 and wounded 50 tribesmen.

All civilians have now been evacuated from Kotli, which is still within range of the raiders’ guns in the hills. Raiding tribesmen in the southern part of Kashmir, according to military reports, are butchering men, women and children and devastating villages along a 35-mile front parallel with the West Punjab (Pakistan) border. Thousands of refugees are pouring from the area. TROOPS’ MORALE POOR The Hindustan Times, which usually gives the rosiest picture of Indian Army operations, said supply kiifficulties, lack of cooperation among the local population, and poor morale among the troops had brought the army in Kashmir to a standstill. Most Indian troops are from the West Punjab and presumably Sikh refugees who were worried because they did not know the whereabouts of their kith and kin.
