No Apologies For Lacquering Queen

WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.)—The gilding of the statue of Queen Victoria in Wellington was recently the subject of a protest from the British Society of Sculptors. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr W. Appleton) was asked at a municipal election meeting last night on whose authority the statue was lacquered. Remarking that Mr R. O. Gross, the Auckland sculptor, had recently asked him the same question, Mr Appleton said he had agreed with one of the city engineers that it would be a good idea to lacquer the statue, which needed cleaning. He added that in two or three months’ time the statue would-be a credit to Wellington; Queen Victoria would look better than she had done for years. “It is my considered opinion, and I have no- apologies to make for lacquering her,” the mayor added.
