Planes Attack Retreating Invaders
NEW DELHI, Tue. (10 a.m.)—Royal Indian Air Force Spitfires and Tempests attacked convoys of invading tribesmen, who are retreating to Kohala Bridge to reach Pakistan <?ver the River Jhelum. The Indian Defence Minister (Baldev Singh) said Indian infantry were 24 miles beyond Baramula in their pursuit of the invaders. A Defence Ministry communique, issued later, said the Indian troops’ advance in Kashmir was held up because of the destruction of bridges and opposition from raiders entrenched on high ground on either side of the Baramula-Uri road, about 10 miles east of Uri. The Prime Minister of India (Mr Nehru) and the Maharajah of Kashmir (Sir Hari Singh) arrived at Srinagar airfield within 90 minutes of each other.
Mr Nehru, who is staying the night, lunched at the palace and conferred at length with the Kashmir Premier (Sheik Abdullah).
A Peshawar communique stated that an aeroplane flew over Garhi Habibullah, on the road between Srinagar and Abbotabad, in the Hazar district in Pakistan, and machine-gunned a police station. Damage and casualties are unknown. PEOPLE BACKED TROOPS
Mr Nehru said he had come to Kashmir to discuss the military situation with the Maharajah and military leaders and devise ways and means of defending Kashmir. If the inhabitants had not supported the Indian troops they would have been powerless to repel the invaders. Hindus, Moslems and Sikhs in Kashmir had fought unitedly for independence, while the Punjab and other parts of India were suffering from acute communal warfare.
Reuters Srinagar correspondent reports that the Premier of Kashmir (Shiekh Abdullah) said he thought there was no possibility of guerilla warfare in Kashmir.
He declared the peasantry was behind the administration.
