Four Deaths in Accidents
CHRISTCHURCH, Sun. (P.A.) — When returning from a deer-stalking trip yesterday, a member of a hunting party was drowned. He was: Mr Norman Thomas Dove, aged 33, married, a poultry farmer, of Hornby.
Mr Dove was attempting to cross the flooded Edwards River, near Otira, when he stumbled and was carried away by the strong current before his three companions, (wo of whom also nearly lost their lives, could come to pis assistance.
Canoe' Capsized
CHRISTCHURCH, Sun. (P.A.)—A young man, believed to be Mr John Baxter, of New Brighton, was drowned when a canoe capsized in the Avon River, near the New Brighton Bridge, at 4.15 o'cock this afternoon. He is said to have bought the canoe this morning. The body has not yet been recovered.
Car Out Of Control
’ HAMILTON, Sun. (Sp.)—When a car got out of control and ran into a swamp, Mr George Brady, 23, labourer. of Opaheke, Papakura, was killed.
His wife, Mrs Dolina Brady, 22, suffered, concussion and shock, and lan Brady, aged six months, received abrasions. *
Mr Brady was thrown a distance of 20ft into deep water and received fatal injuries. Mrs Brady and her child were taken to the Waikato Hospital. The child suffered only slight injuries and Mrs Brady’s condition is not serious. An inquest was opened at Huntly this morning before Mr A. G. Ward, coroner, and adjourned.
Fall From Cycle
AUCKLAND, Mon. (Sp.)—Miss Eileen Thelma Hayes 22, of 112 Wellesley Street, Auckland, was fatally injured when she fell from a motor cycle on the Waterfront Road on Saturday.
The motor cycle was being driven by Mr Colin Campbell Ramsey, aged 25, of Ponsonby, who was travelling toward Mission Bay.
He began to turn into Watene Crescent, behind the Maori settlement, when Miss Hayes fell off, landing on her head. She died almost at once.
Mr Ramsey was thrown over the front of the cycle and fell on the grass at the edge of the Maori village. He suffered only slight injuries.
Fractured Thigh, Lay For 11 Hours
AUCKLAND, Mon. (Sp.)—An elderly woman, Mrs Kathleen MeLoughlin, aged 70, of Newton, Auckland, lay on the floor of her bedroom for 11 hours after she fell out of bed about midnight on Saturday and fractured her right thigh.
Her cries and hammerings were not heard until next morning, when neighbours had to break in to help her. Mrs MeLoughlin was admitted to the Middlemore Hospital.
Cars Involved in Corner CoSlision
A collision between two motor cars occurred at the junction of Walton Street, and Water Street on Saturday evening.
A heavy five-seater car driven by Mr J. Bradburn, of Kamo Road, Whangarei, and an 8 h.p. Morris driven by Mr N. J. Mason, of Fourth Avenue, were involved.
The light car was extensively damaged, the body and the chassis being most affected.
The left hand mudguard and the left headlamp of Mr Bradburn’s car and apparently the engine were damaged.
Neither could be driven away after the accident. Mr Mason and his son, Mr J. Mason, who was a passenger in the car were taken to hospital for * treatment for wounds to the head and shock.
Mr J. Mason was treated and discharged the same evening while Mr N. J. Mason was admitted to hospital and discharged yesterday.
