New Telephone Cable Divisions

The new 1000 line cable part of which has already been laid underground by Whangarei Post and Telegraph employees will extend as far as Ruatangata Springs in the northerly direction and up Mill Road as far as Cairnfield Road.

Replacing the 500-line cable which has seen service for a number of years, ‘the new cable was pulled through pipes for the complete length of Bank Street from the Regent corner to the Chief Post Office. However when it is divided into the two main sections these will be buried in the ground in trenches which will be dug along the side of the footpaths.

The operation of pulling the cable through the pipes aroused considerable public interest, especially- among the younger people. Before and after school hours large groups of children could be seen standing round, intensely observing the work being undertaken at the bottom of the man-holes in the street.
