Whangarei Club Gets Under Way
Over 80 players were on the Whangarei Tennis Club's courts this afternoon for the official opening of the 1947-48 season. They represented all local and many country clubs. A welcome was extended by the president (Mr J. T. Small), and trophies won last season were presented by Mr R. S. Finch, a life member of the club. Championship awards went to the following:— Men’s singles, E. Child; women’s singles, Miss M. Finlayson; men’s doubles, R. Mullins and J. Price; women’s doubles. Misses M. Finlayson and M. Carter; combines, R. Mullins and Miss M. Finlayson; boys' junior singles, L. Dyer; girls’ junior singles, Miss M. Sweeney. The club has a membership of over 100 this season. This number includes several new names. The eight grass courts and surrounding area have received considerable attention from enthusiastic members during the off-season and looked a picture when a Yankee tournament got under way. The playing surfaces in particular had a very pleasing appearance and should provide excellent playing conditions for the season.
