Watersiders Will Work At Week-end

AUCKLAND, Sat. (P.A.)—To save food for Britain, Auckland waterside workers have agreed to work as required throughout the week-end. Faced by a possible breakdown in the refrigeration gear of the Now Zealand Shipping Company’s vessel Kaipaki, gangs will work all today, tomorrow and on Labour Day, if necessary, but not any night shifts, to unload frozen meat which would otherwise probably be ruined by Monday, by brine from burst refrigeration pipes.

Grids carrying the brine used for refrigeration burst in No. 2 hold of the Kaipaki yesterday, injuring a foreman (Mr J. M. Brien).

By noon today it was estimated that one and a half tons of brine had flooded on to the frozen meat.

It is understood that much of the meat is Australian, but no information could be obtained from the shipping company. The vessel part-loaded in Australia and two holds were being worked in Auckland.
