‘No Chance Of New Annexe For Years’
There is no chance of the Whangarei Hospital Board getting a new maternity annexe for some years, possibly for many years. This information was given to the board’s chairman (Mr J. A. S. MacKay) by the Director of the Division of Hospitals (Dr L. C. McNickle), who visited the hospital yesterday. Dr McNickle recommended, said Mr Mac Kay, that the board do the best it could with the present building in the meantime.
The question will be discussed at next board meeting.
Mr Mac Kay commented today that making alterations to the present building and at the same time continuing to provide attention for mothers would present a very difficult problem.
However, the annexe was overcrowded and something would have to be done.
There still remained the difficulty of providing accommodation for nurses, a problem which would continue until the new nurses’ home was completed. Mr Mac Ka- said that Dr McNickle also investigated the proposal to deviate the present road behind the laundry, and thought that considerable expenditure would be justified to get the extra building sites.
