LULL IN TRAVEL FRON N.Z.
(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. Caused by the approaching' northern winter a decrease in New Zealand passenger bookings to Britain is evident.
Few liners leaving direct for Britain in the next two months are carrying even moderate passenger lists. The demand for travel from New Zealand and Australia to South Africa is shown by the decision to send several large liners by way of an Australian port and Capetown. The present seasonal decline in travel does not compare, however, with the lull in the corresponding months before the war.
It was not uncommon then tor lire Rangitata or her sister ships to carry about 20 passengers homeward, and lists kept for such liners as the Tamaroa and Mataroa show that at that time they took as few as nine. From next January bookings show the trend towards recovery as travellers plan to reach Britain for the spring. Some ships are booked heavily as far ahead as May.
