Farmers Feel Causfie Soda Shortage

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. “Farmers are crying out for supplies of caustic soda to clean their milking machines,” said Mr A. J. Garry (Taupiri) at a meeting of the Auckland Dairy Factory Managers’ Association. He said that machines were becoming slimy and the standard of dairy products would drop unless supplies of caustic soda came to hand immediately. The Director of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture (Mr H. A. Foy) said that the Minister of Food in England knew of the need for caustic soda, but nothing had been done because of the need for alkalis in the manufacture of high grade crockery. Mr Garry pointed out that farmers had been using washing powder but it had been tainting the cream. Particular care should be taken, he said, that powder used did not contain disinfectant.
