Demand Referendum In Banking Issue

(Roc. 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The campaign against the Federal Government’s decision to nationalise private trading banks is gathering momentum in both cities and country areas throughout Australia. Every branch of every bank is collecting signatures for a mass protest demanding that the Government hold a referendum before proceeding with its plans. The Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) Stated, however, that he had not considered submitting the bank nationalisation proposal to a referendum and did not intend to do so. -*

The Government, he said, was! sat-, isfied that constitution conferred upon the Federal Government the power to legislate as it was planning to do. ■, The organisers of the demand for a referendum hope that because of the protests there will be a sufficient division of opinion inside caucus to persuade the Government to change its. mind.

Political observers, however, see no immediate prospect of caucus going against Mr Chifley's wishes.
