Footpath For Maungaturoto DHS

(Special) PAPARCA, This Day. The Otamatea County Council is prepared to contribute 25 per cent oi the £227 required to provide a footpath from the Maungaturoto District High School gates to Hargraves’ corner.

Supporting a request, which emanated from the School Committee, the chairman (Mr T. H. C. Snclling) said it was hoped to get a £1 for £1 subsidy from the Main Highways Boardwhile the School Committee and the businessmen whose properties adjoined the site of the proposed footpath, would also give assistance.

Mr Snclling did not want this instance to be used as a precedent for seeking the assistance of the council in the laying down of other areas ol footpath in Manugaturoto. The children now walked in the roadway. Cr N. McQueen said that it was the duty of the council to remove any hazards which might be the source of accidents to school pupils. The Maungaturoto High School was used by children from many districts of the county and daily a lot of children travelled from the outlying districts by buses and cars. School Bus Service

That the bad state of some roads in the Taipuha district would affect the efficiency of the running of a school bus service which it was proposed to inaugurate during the third term or school, was made known by Cr H. S. McCarroll.

Mr McCarroll stated that a section of the “Central” road—which was on the proposed school-bus circuit—had been impassible for vehicular traffic for some time.

Instead of being able to make a complete circuit the bus would have to make two trips—as far as it could go on each side of the bad stretches of lead and then doubling back on its tracks—and so having to traverse nearly tw'ice the distance. The county engineer (Mr A. W. Tassell) said it would be impossible to repair the road until the advent of drier weather.
