Compton Equals Hobbs 7 Record
(Rcc. 1 pm.) LONDON, Sept. 2. By making 139 for Middlesex Compton has now equalled Hobbs' record of 16 centuries for a season. He played a masterly innings and showed no sign of nerves, even when in the nineties.
Hobbs made his record in 1925. Hutton’s 270 not out for Yorkshire against Hampshire was the season's highest individual score, and beat Edrich’s 267 not out against Northants in J uly. Hutton's stand with Yardley produced 273 in 160 minutes.
Final positions in the county cricket championship are: Middlesex 236 points, Gloucester 216, Lancashire 186, Kent 172, Derby 160, Surrey 140, Worcester and Yorkshire 120, Glamorgan and Sussex 116, Essex, Notts and Somerset 100, Leicester 92, Warwick 84, Hampshire 78, Northants 54. THE FINAL SERIES County cricket resulted: Lancashire: First innings, 352 (Ikin 73, Washbrook 67); second, 153 (Bedford 54). Middlesex: First innings, 134 (Edrich 55; Ikin 5 for 37); second, 307 (Compton 139; Price 4,fcr 166). Lancashire won by 64 runs. * Gloucester: First innings. 324 (Barnett 85; P. Smith 7 for 102); second, 365 (Wilson 72, Cranfield 90). Essex: First innings, 215 (P. Smith 50; Cook 5 for 83, God--5 for 106); second, 157 (Cook 5 for 73, Goddard 4 for 57). Gloucester won by 317' runs.
Hampshire: First innings, 308 (Dawson 124; Bcwes 5 for 52); second, 6 for 295 (Harrison 61 not out. Rogers 81). Yorkshire: First innings, 5 for 404 dec. (Hutton 270 not out, Yardley 136). The game was drawn. /

(Hardstaff 221, Giles 51); second, 2 for 192 (Keeton 103 not out). Notts won by eight wickets. Surrey: First innings, 473 (Bcrling 146, A. Bedser 126, E, Bedser 73). Somerset: First innings, 167 (Watts 71; Gover 5 for 38, A. Bedser 4 lor 27); second, 233 (Woodhousc 64, Holmes 56; Laker 5 for 22). Surrey won by an innings and 73 runs. % , , Against Sussex, South Africa declared its first innings closed with six down for 555 and in its last 0 for 45. Sussex in its second innings made 281 (James Langridge 55). The game was drawn.
