Ecuador Rebels Nearing Quito

(10 a.m.) QUITO (Ecuador), Sept. 2. Conservative counter-revolutionary forces seeking to overthrow Colonel Mancheno’s 10-day-old regime, are reported today to be only 12 miles from Quito in their march on the capital, which began after the garrisons al Tulcan and Ibarra joined the counterrevolutionary army. The garrison of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s leading port, also joined the counterrevolutionaries.

Captain Antonio Rivas Hidalgo assumed command of the Quayaquil garrison. He was said to be supported by all junior officers in the Bolivar artillery regiment, the mechanised corps and an anti-aircraft battery.

He issued a manifesto promising to maintain order and absolute freedom of the Press.
