Shipping Firms' Heavy Losses In 6 Months

CARGO PILLAGING

(Special) / AUCKLAND, This Day. FOR the six months ended June 30 Auckland shipping agencies have paid out £20,000 to meet claims arising out of cases of proved and suspected pillaging of overseas cargo.

In addition a considerable amount was paid out by insurance companies. Of the total of £20,000, a sum of £8873 was paid out in proven cases of pillaging and £11,136 for goods classified as “shorthanded.” but strongly suspected of having been pillaged. In the six months under review, 38 overseas ships belonging to the agencies concerned discharged cargo at Auckland and the average claim met in respect of each vessel was £526. The most disastrous month was March, when £5731 was paid out. Most of the stolen merchandise was in short supply on the local controlled market. The claims covered goods which vanished between the time the shipping interests took responsibility for them at the overseas port of loading and the time of delivery to the consignees in Auckland. Evidence gleaned by Queen’s Wharf detectives indicates that much of the pillaging cannot be attributed to local waterfront thieves.
