No Minister For Economic Council
(Special) WELLINGTON, This Day. No Cabinet Minister will be sent from New Zealand to attend the meeting of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, which is to be held in the United States, commencing on July 19. It is expected that the Dominion will be represented by the newly-appoint-ed High Commissioner for New Zealand in Canada (Mr J. Thorn). New Zealand was elected a member of the Economic and Social Council last year. The first meeting since then was held in New York in February, when the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) represented New Zealand. The slender majority of the Government in the House of Representatives is responsible for the decision not to send a Minister from New Zealand, as well as the probability that the preliminary conference of British Commonwealth nations on the peace treaty with Japan, to be held in Canberra on August 25, will clash with the Economic and Social Council. A member of the staff of the Department of External Affairs will be sent to America to assist Mr Thorn.
