Chinese Crowds Enjoy Revenge
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI. June 17. Two Japanese officers condemned to death for war atrocities were paraded through the city streets today before being shot in the presence of a jeering crowd.
The streets were pVcked with spectators as the men were driven in an open truck with signs tied to them detailing their crimes and the penalty. The crowds applauded, jeered and cursed as the truck passed. Some spat and threw garbage.
The prisoners were Captain Harochi Yonemura. known as the “Wolf of Changshu,” who buried alive over 100 Chinese, and Jiro ShimOta, the “Tiger of Kiangkying,” convicted of murder, plunder and rape. Yonemura grinned back at the crowd right up to the moment when the executioner pushed him to his knees in the mud and shot him through head. Shimota looked grim but showed no signs of fear. After the executions the crowds swarmed over the bodies.
