She stowed away on the Marine Phoenix at Auckland on June 6, war discovered and sent back by air from Fiji, landing yesterday. “My husband is now in America living on a war pension, and as we could not afford the boat fare I decided to stew away,” she said.

“I wanted to be with my husband. "It was too cold to sleep on deck, so I looked around for some plcae to sleep.” Mrs Ramey explained that she wandered round for a time until she found herself outside the brig and broke into it.

“I locked the door behind me and stayed in there for two days,” she continued.

"I, did not dare to go out for food so I did without.

“After the two days the chief mate discovered me. Everyone was very kind to me. I was landed at Suva after being on board three days.” When asked what she planned to do now, Mrs Ramey said that she intended to work until she had enough money to pay back the shipping company for the ship and plane fares, and had enough for the fare to America. “Then I hope to see my husband,” she added.
