LSTs Unsuitable For Car Transport

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. According to advice received from the Union Steamship Company by the Automobile Association (Wellington*, tank landing ships, although available for purchase, would not be suitable for the transport of motor vehicles across Cook Strait.

The Automobile Association had suggested the use of such craft, particularly between Wellington and Picton, but the shipping company stated that expert opinion was that the craft were unsuitable for commercial use “as distinct from use by the Army and Navy, which enjoy exemption from very onerous statutory regulations.”
