CROP OF ACCIDENTS ON KING'S BIRTHDAY

MAINLY as an outcome of the King’s Birthday holiday celebrations, the staff of the Whangarei Hospital yesterday coped with a record number of accident cases which mamly arrived by ambulance late in the afternoon.

Most serious case was that of Rosie Hill, a six-year-old Maori girl, of Tahere, who was badly scalded about her back, buttocks, abdomen, thighs and arms when hot milk spilt. Her condition is critical.

When his face came in contact with an opponent’s knee, Ronald Burke, 11, of 14 Anzac Road, a League player, suffered severe cuts inside and outside his lip, necessitating insertion of several stitches. Somewhat similar injuries were received by Raymond Cotton, 13, of Puwera, when he was hit with a hockey stick between the upper lip and nose. He was bleeding profusely when admitted to hospital. Extensive stitching was also necessary in the case of William Fields, 22, of Hikurangi, playing for Old Boys B, when a flying hockey stick cut him deeply across the left forehead. A head-on impact with a High School player in the final of the junior Rugby tournament, resulted in Gerrard, Beazely 21, a winger for Old Boys, being carried off with deep concussion. His condition is now good.

When a log which ho was handling on his Puhipuhi farm rolled over his left leg. William Parsons, 39, suffered a crushed ankle. Falling from a pony, Leonard Tobin. 14, of 24 Kensington Avenue, fractured both bones of his left forearm. Seven-a-side sports fixture contributed the majority of casualties. SPECTATOR HURT Highly unusual was the misadventure which befell William Rata, 57. of Takahiwai. Watching a League match at Jubilee Park, he moved smartly to avoid collision with a player thrown into touch, slipped and broke his left leg.
