Value Of Imposts
Into NZ Least- Year (Special) WELLINGTON, This Day. The value of goods brought into New Zealand last year was 38 per cent above the pre-war level, but the actual volume of imports was 25 per cent below the 1936-1938 level.
These figures are revealed in the Abstract of Statistics. Statistics of I total import trade were not fully com- | parable with pre-war figures until 1946 because of the wartime shipments of ordnance supplies. The value of imports, excluding ordnance. fell to 75 per cent of the prewar total in 1942. increased in 1943 and 1944, fell again in 1945 and increased sharply in 1946. The total of £71.034,000 in 1946 was 38 per cent above the pre-war level. Considerable increases in import prices occurred during the war years and the aggregate volume of imports fell away sharply, reaching in 1942 52 per cent of the average annual volume in the years 1936 to 1938. An increase to 68 per cent in 1944 did not represent improvements in supplies of imported consumer goods, but was made up of the larger quantities of materials for industries particularly connected with the war effort.
