Whangarei YWCA Meets

All branches of membership were well represented at the annual meeting of the Whangarei YWCA, presided over by the Mayor (Mr W. Jones). Officers • elected were: President, Mrs D. F. Armstrong; board of directors: Mesdames G. Barriball, P. S. N. Connell, W. J. Court, E. J. Y)ale, G. Haigh, N. Horrobin, W. Jackman, W. Jones, C. M. Hill. C. V. Marshall, C. Poolman, J. Wilson, T. E. Woodman, and Misses E. McLeod and M, M. Bethell; advisory board, Messrs W. J. Court, W. Reynolds, J. Tudehope, A. Kelly and A. M. Bradburn. The secretary’s report told of a very successful year’s work. Business Girls’ Club, Recreational Club, Girl Citizens, Business and Professional Women’s Club, Gaiety ClUb and Social Club have continued to vary their programmes to the tastes of the particular group. HIGHER MEMBERSHIP Membership had increased by 64 during the year. Two new groups had commenced. * A club for young married women offered a programme specially for their interest and enabled those with children to belong to a club, as special arrangements are made for children. An interesting feature of the informal “Drop In” Club on Friday evenings was that attendance in ratio. of boys to girls was 3—l. The programme of fh e association has grown during the year so that it now more truly carries out one of the aims of the YWCA—to cater for a cross-section membership in age, occupation and interests. Approximately 120 attended the camps, one at Waipu Cove over Easter, which was a co-ed camp, and the Christmas camp for girls on Moturua Island in the Bay of Islands.. Sports teams had had a successful year. Three teams, an increase of one, were entered in the basketball association competitions. Two ball games teams which travelled to Auckland won an equal number of points and shared the Lady Wilson Cup for .the best YWCA team. EIGHT YEARS’ LEADERSHIP , The association was represented at the National Conference of YWCA pirls’ clubs by four girl members— Misses M. Claris, P. Tercel, J. Chapman and J. Connell. Funds for travel and other expenses were raised by club members. Four women representatives attended the National Board of the YWCA of New Zealand in October. The Mayor paid tribute to the eight years of faithful work and devoted service given by Mrs W. J, Court in her capacity as president. Miss E. McLeod, on behalf of the board of directors and members, presented Mrs Court with'flowers. Mrs Court said that she had enjoyed all the work the • office had brought with it She thanked all members, board of directors and staff who had assisted. her by loyal and faithful service.

Mrs Armstrong, in thanking members following her election as president, also paid tribute to Mrs Court'S work, and said that she knew she was following i n the footsteps of someone who had set a very high Musical items were rendered by tire Eachelor Girls’ Club and Miss Nancy Lee and Miss Merle Aston.
