Need More Land For Ex-Servicemen
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. ‘'We, need considerably more land for settling servicemen and we shall continue to negotiate with owners of suitable properties," said the Minister of Rehabilitation (Mr Skinner) today. The Minister said that from remarks he made a fortnight ago a wrong impression had been formed in some quarters that the Crown now had all the land necessary to complete the rehabilitation programme, and would not be negotiating for tiny more. The Minister said the Lands Department had well over 300,000 acres in various stages of development, but much of it consisted o'f completely deteriorated land, which, because of the shortage of materials, would not be ready for settlement for some years—far too late to be used for exservicemen settlement.
"What we need is land capable of sub-division and settlement with a minimum of development work, and with 5000 men graded A still awaiting settlement, we must continue with outnegotiations for the purchase of suitable land,” said Mr Skinner.
