Whangarei Borough Council Business

Tiie monthly meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council was held op Tuesday night.

Municipal Orchestra.—A subsidy from the council Was sought by the Whangarei Municipal Symphony Orchestra. which also asked permission for funds remaining from the former orchestra to be made available to it. The town clerk (Mr L. C. Hail) reported that the previous orchestra had been assisted bv grants of £36 in 1942. £39 TO - in 1943 and £lO in 1944. The council granted a subsidy of £lO and gave permission for the other money to be handed over. The Mayor (Mr W. Jones) said that within the next few months a great opportunity ■would be presented to the orchestra. He referred to the projected establishment of a breadcasting station in Whangarei.

Sale of Poultry. —Recently stopped by the borough inspector from retailing dressed poultry, a Whangarei grocer asked for permission to make such sales. Ho considered his premises were suitable for the- sales of poultry, which were obtained from returned servicemen and were pi public demand. After considering a report from the inspector, who stated that the Health Department did not favour the sale of meat, which included poultry, in unlicensed premises, the council declined permission.

Raumanga Stream. —Several owners of property on the Raumanga Stream drew attention to a deposit of shingle which they feared would force the water to the opposite side of the, bed and cause erosion. The engineer (Mr I. A. Crcmie) reported that the blockage would cause flooding of the properties unless it were removed. This would cost about £7O, but the shingle cop Id be used as a base course in Bedlington Street. The work was authorised.

Street Names.— An inspection of all street name-plates to ascertain renewal work required and costs involved was in hand, the engineer reported. Health Camp. —Tlie King George V. Memorial Health Camp executive applied tor a donation to assist its work at Maunu. The council granted £25.

Islington Street. —Stating that Islington Street was overgrown and was unsafe for mothers with prams, a resident asked for repairs to be made. The engineer reported that the footpath had been graded, but had not been used and had become overgrown. The request was referred to the works committee.

Rus-Stop Painting, —A recommendation by the traffic and transport committee that bus-stops in tire town area should be painted yellow instead of white, was adopted. Bush Reserve. —As five months had elapsed since it had stated its intention of transferring to the council an area of bush in Fifth Avenue, conditional on the council doing certain improvement work, the Melanesian Mission Trust Board wrote asking for information. A cash offer had been received and unless the council’s intentions were notified the board's offer would be withdrawn. It was decided to notify the board that the council proposed to complete the improvement work as early as possible, but at present material was net available.

Compost For Parks. —Acting on a suggestion from the parks committee the council decided to obtain from Dannevirke particulars of a scheme for collection household refuse and turning it into compost for list in parks and reserves.

Library Hours. —The council adopted a recommendation by the library committee that from the time of the change-over to the Country Library Service the Friday hours at the Public Library should be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Winter Show’. —Permission to close Robert Street and Hannah Street between June 24 and 28 while the winter show was being held was granted to the Whangarei A. and P. Society. Mobile kitchen. —A rental charge of 10 - a week in addition to an eating-’ house licence for a mobile kitchen, to be operated by a returned serviceman, was approved. Hassard Street. —Eighteen residents of Hassard Street petitioned for the tar-sealing of the road to obviate the dust nuisance caused by heavy traffic. The petitioners are to be informed that the council had in view a comprehensive scheme for improvement of streets, and Hassard Street would receive consideration.

Clyde Street Sealing. —Sealing of Clyde Street at a ccst of £l3O was approved on the recommendation of the works committee.
