League Circles Enthusiastic

The attendance of 40 enthusiasts at a meeting of the Northland Rugby League last evening provided a happy augury for the renaissance of the code in the' Whangarei district. Four senior and three junior sides have been assured, it was stated. It is hoped to increase the number in the lower grade before practice matches are held on April 19. Tlie championships arc to set under way on the following Saturday. Working bees held at Jubilee Park on recent week-ends have been largely attended and already the ground is practically ready for play. The four senior teams taking part in the championship series this year are City, Kamo, Hikurangi and Takahiwai.

The three junior sides already guaranteed are City, Kamo and Portland. Although the League has not yet obtained a copy of its constitution from cne of the trustees appointed when the recess was taken at the outset of the war, last, night's meeting proceeded with the election of an executive which will be confirmed and added to when the records are forthcoming. MR JOHNSON APPLAUDED

The election of Mr J. F. Johnson as president was made with much enthusiasm.

Members paid high tribute to 'the magnificent part played by Mr Johnson through the years on behalf of .'Rugby League football. in the North. The chairman of the New Zealand. Rugby League Council (Mr J. A. Redwood), of Auckland, referred to Mr Johnson’s sterling qualities at the inaugural meeting of Northland enthusiasts recently. - r-

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. The Auckland representative Rugby team this season is to be chosen by three selectors.

One of the trio will be appointed by the union as chairman of the selection committee.
