No Tinned Salmon Available Yet
Following the granling of extra licences to import tinned fish cabled advices from Canada state that no supplies of salmon will be available for export until the new seasor/s pack will be ready later in the year. Regarding Norwegian sardines there is a carry-over, and orders have geen accepted for the quantities offering. Evaporated Apricots. —Merchants are advised that a shipment of evaporated apricots from Iran will shortly be available for distribution. This is altogether a new source of supply, and as yet there is no indication if price and quality will compare with those of shipments due to come from Australia. Fruit Pulp.—Definite information' has at last come to hand regarding the quantity of fruit pulp available from Australia for export to New Zealand. There are only two lines, raspberry and black currant, and the quantity represents only a very small percentage oi New Zea.and s requirements. Aoart from the shortage of the crop the greater portion of puip tor export will .go lo the United Kingdom. The crop of apricots su'd plums is almost a total failure and Tasmania is unable to offer any for this market. Cigarettes.—A reduction in the Api it quotas of cigarettes, due to the present power restrictions, is advised by the locu manufacturers. • Supplies of local and imported cigarettes were short ioi the first of the month deliveries, but a shipment of Canadian just lo hand and a further quantity of South African awaiting to be discharged should relieve the position. , „ . . , Clothes Pegs.—Over a very lor.-g period clothes pegs have been in very short supply. Advices are to hand that a small supply,of Canadian will be available shortly and a shipment of Swedish pegs due to arrive about the end ot the month should offer some relief to this P °Spicer.— All spices, particularly those in small packs, are in very short supply, due mostlv to shortage of labour. Colombo Tea Sales.— Offerings totabed 4.667,0001 bat the Ceylon tea sales on Tuesday. The demand was strong, with prices ‘ little changed from last week except for good liquoring brokens. which were much dearer. Flowery brokerorange pekoes brought as high as --0 a rupees a lb (about 5/-).
