Whangarei High Schools Annual Sports Meeting

ATHLETICS

A LIGHT shower heralded the opening of the first day's programme of the annual sports of the Whangarei Boys and Girls’ High Schools yesterday. The same thing happened this morning when the second day’s schedule was about to begin. The shower lasted 10 minutes and then the sun came out and it looked as though teachers, pupils and parents were again going to be lucky with the weather.

GIRLS' JUMP RECORDS The feature of the first day yesterday was flic record-braeking performances of the competitors in tlie intermediate girls' long jump. Laurel Philpott added almost two feet to the old record. which was eclipsed seven times during the event. The remarkable improvement is a tribute to the coaching and training which 'these gilds receive as members of the Whangarei Amateur Athletic Club. The club only introduced women's events on its programmes this season and the benefit is already very much apparent. As usual, the sports went off with the perfect precision which has earned the Whangarei High Schools a wide reputation. Except for a few harmless drops, the promised rain did not materialise.
